It's just High Point Market now

Heath E. Combs — Furniture Today,
HIGH POINT — First it was the Southern Furniture Exposition, then the International Home Furnishings Market.

From now on, it’s just the High Point Market.

At a board meeting for the former International Home Furnishings Market Authority, now the High Point Market Authority, President Brian Casey said the market has adopted the new name. The Market Authority is the organizing body of the High Point Market.

Also, there was a need to  “slim down” the lengthy High Point International Home Furnishings Market title, Casey said, adding that attendees tended to refer to markets by simpler titles, like the Tupelo market or the Las Vegas market.

One factor in the renaming were attendees polled at the Las Vegas market in July, Casey said. Retailers tended to call the market here the High Point market — not the former official name.

First named the Southern Furniture Exposition after the Southern Furniture Exposition Building around 1920, the market was renamed in the late-1980s shortly after leadership at the big building changed its name to the International Home Furnishings Center.

With the renaming the market authority is adopting a new logo for the market, a tree, symbolic of ongoing growth, Casey said.

Additionally, Casey joked, “trees don’t grow in the desert.”
