Hekman to close Grand Rapids plant

— Furniture Today,
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — High-end home office and occasional resource Hekman Furniture will cease production of several product lines made here, the company announced.

The company will lay off about 60 workers and transfer remaining lines to other facilities, according to a press release. Company officials could not be reached for comment.

“This has been a difficult but necessary decision for the Heckman organization. This transition is dictated, among other reasons, by continued global competition and domestic excess capacity within the residential furniture industry,” the release said.

Hekman will keep its head office in Grand Rapids, where it was founded in 1922, and other facilities in western Michigan and North Carolina will continue in operation.
