4-Year-Old Girl Crushed By Piece Of Furniture

Death Appears Accidental
(STNG) CHICAGO A 4-year-old South Side girl died Friday evening after being crushed by a piece of falling furniture, authorities said Saturday.

Marina Diaz, of 4829 S. Tripp Ave., was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. Friday at Mt. Sinai Hospital, according to a Cook County medical examiner’s office spokesman.

According to police, it appeared that the girl pulled a piece of furniture onto herself at the Tripp Avenue address Friday night, said police News Affairs Officer Kristina Schuler.

“It doesn’t look like anyone pushed it on her or anything,” Schuler said. “It’s just a tragic accident.”

A Department of Children and Family Services spokesman said the agency was not investigating the death but that they have had prior contact with the family, according to Jimmie Whitelow. He declined to say what the prior contact has been regarding.

An autopsy performed Saturday determined Diaz died from cranio-cerebral injuries and from being crushed by a falling object, the medical examiner’s spokesman said. Her death was ruled to be accidental, he said.
