Top 100 chain will concentrate on more profitable markets
LOS ANGELES — Top 100 chain McMahan’s is closing its lone Nevada store in Reno and two others in Oregon, and will concentrate on more profitable markets.
The Reno location, with a 36,000-square-foot showroom and 16,000-square-foot warehouse, is the largest to close. Also closing are a 16,000-square-foot store in Astoria, Ore., and a 30,000-square-foot store in Oregon’s capital, Salem.
“We’re going to be liquidating our inventory in an orderly fashion,†said Taylor Ganz, vice president of the Los Angeles-based retailer, which will have 17 stores in California and Oregon when the closings are completed.
He would not elaborate on the sales, except to say all three stores would be closed before the end of the year.
Ganz said the three closing stores were no longer profitable. “We’ve decided to put our resources in more profitable markets,†he said.
In Reno, McMahan’s and other furniture stores are up against stiff new competition from Salt Lake City-based R.C. Willey, which opened a 170,000-square-foot store and warehouse there in November. R.C. Willey is owned by Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway.
