PENANG,(Bernama) —
This could not have been more true for Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) technician Mohd Zamri Othman, 48, who was inspired to produce furniture
from cardboard and tissue paper so that his ailing mother could sit comfortably.
It all started when his mother, Che Nan Md Isa, who was nursing aching knees, visited his unfurnished house sometime in 2002.
“I was saddened to see my mother sit on the floor. So I thought why not make a chair from cardboard for her. It was only one month later that my mother could sit on the cardboard chair I made for her which cost me only about RM30,” he recalled.
He has since produced a sofa, a cupboard, a container for spices and curtain railings from cardboard and tissue paper for personal use.
His ingenuity was presented at the Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning Conference, here Tuesday.
Although his mother had since died, it did not stop Mohd Zamri from inventing other furniture from cardboard and tissue paper without the use of a single nail.
“They are glued together, 95 per cent cardboard and five per cent tissue paper,” he said, adding that a fine coat of paint made the furniture stand out.
He got the idea of embedding the tissue paper after watching Astro’s channel 61 programme entitled “Art Attack”.
Mohd Zamri said he planned to market such furniture in the near future.
