In a 7 Problem Solver Report, Iowa’s News Channel broke the story of the sudden closing of an Eastern Iowa furniture store – and customers who felt ripped off.
Iowa’s News Channel was there, when angry customers and the police
showed up at Jack Evans Furniture in Waterloo on Friday.. the day after the store closed. Workers moving furniture into a truck scattered, and the company’s owner wasn’t available for comment.
Tonight, Iowa’s Attorney General has some advice for those customers who say the company owes them money – or furniture… and for everyone else making major purchases. According to the Attorney General it all depends on how you paid. He also gave us some advice on what to do when making a big purchase.
Attorney General Tom Miller says the situation is unfortunate. “They saved, they’ve paid some money down, they’ve made a nice purchase, envisioned it in their home…so it’s a very bad thing when it happens.. ”
Miller says his office is looking into the sudden closure of Evan’s Furniture. “We’ve received some complaints in our office and opened an investigation and are going to try and do everything we can do.”
Miller says people who paid with a credit card should contact the credit card company to get the charges reversed. Debit card companies also generally reverse charges.
Miller says cash is hard to get back, but not impossible. “When people pay cash, it’s a little more difficult. But we want to pursue the company and the individuals to see what happened and see if we can get some of the money back.”
Miller says paying credit is a good choice on a big purchase. “A good practice as if it’s in anticipation of something is to us a credit card cause you can reverse the charges.”
So if you made a payment to Evan’s Furniture, but didn’t get your furniture, the Attorney General’s Office, may be able to help. No one answered the phone, when we called Evans Furniture today.
The Evans Furniture store in Davenport is also apparently closed. The phone number listed was disconnected.
