Maine Fire Marshal John Dean is in Washington to tout the need for national legislation on the flammability of upholstered furniture.
Â
Dean is the president of the National Association of State Fire Marshals. He’s been lobbying for a federal standard on the danger of furniture fires for 13 years.
“It accounts for about 10 fire deaths, nationally, a week and accounts for 2.7 billion dollars in property damage a year, so it’s probably one of the most combustible materials in the home. ”
Dean is holding a news conference today in Washington about the furniture flammability issue.
